Outpatient Drug Rehab – Thousand Oaks
Genesis Program’s has served the City of Thousand Oaks, CA residents seeking recovery since 2007. In those years we have seen a tremendous increase in drug abuse in the Thousand Oaks area, first with what was known as the “meth epidemic,” then the over-prescribing of opiate pain medications, and more recently in heroin addiction. At the same time, we have seen a tremendous increase in expensive residential programs, long waiting lists for government funded programs, and a decline in drug rehab programs suited to treat middle class families.

Genesis was designed to treat middle class people with upper class problems, making treatment both affordable and practical. Outpatient treatment does require the stability to stay clean between sessions. In some cases, this may require medical detoxification or residential treatment. In many cases, however, with sufficient support and accountability, people are able to stop using and pursue recovery by admitting directly into outpatient treatment. Often, you do not have the luxury of taking time off work to enter a residential program for 30-60 days. Or perhaps you have child care responsibilities that require an outpatient solution.
For many men, the fact that they still have a job and are functioning in the role of provider serves to convince them that their problem is not so bad. For many women, the belief that they are still a good mother convinces them they do not have a problem. It is often their denial that keeps them from seeing the truth of their situation — that perhaps they are holding on to their job by a hair, that they have been overlooked for promotions, that they are functioning far below their potential. Or perhaps that their children are acting out or over-achieving in an attempt to provide normalcy to the family. Or maybe in an effort to be their child’s friend, the parents have abdicated their parental role and in fact are providing little actual parenting.
The job of treatment is to engage the participant in being a participant in a life change process. This needs to be presented as an opportunity. At Genesis, we offer our participants options and allow them to make choices. Our relationship with our participants is one of partnership or collaboration. Change is a 3-step process — Awareness, Acceptance, and Action. No change begins without the awareness that there is a problem. Most families come to Genesis with the awareness that drugs are “the problem,” usually motivated by some recent crisis. While drug use is indeed part of the problem, it is only part of the problem. In fact the drug use to the user is actually the solution or escape from the problem. Through a process of education and counseling, we help our participants to understand how all family members are affected by addiction and to work together toward a mutual solution. This serves to remove much of the shame that accompanies addiction.
Often, armed with this new found awareness, our participants want to jump into action, correcting their behavior they now see as wrong. While action is indeed a key part of the recovery process, action alone will not sustain recovery without acceptance — acceptance of our own and others’ shortcomings, acceptance that we cannot change the past, acceptance that recovery is a process. Too often in treatment programs there is a focus on what recovery eliminates: the alcohol or other drug use and related problems, the blaming of others, the shaming, the enabling behavior, etc. We believe that true recovery is focused on what recovery adds to individuals, families, and communities: health, productivity, intimacy, citizenship.
We believe that it is outpatient treatment that provides the true opportunities for action and the reinforcing of acceptance. While residential programs may strip away some of the denial system and increase the participant’s awareness, it is through the process of practical application of recovery skills in a supportive environment that true self-acceptance is solidified. Through the process of trial and error, just like all new skills are learned, recovery skills can become natural and healthy coping responses to life’s circumstances. This is just as true for family members as for substance users.
Thousand Oaks residents can receive drug rehab services at our Ventura location. We offer morning and evening sessions to fit your schedule. To facilitate healing within the family system we hold Family Sessions once per week. You will begin your treatment with an assessment that helps to identify your needs and to design an effective treatment program. We can refer you to a different level of care should you not be stable enough for our program.
