Proven Outpatient Rehab Success, Since 1993

Outpatient Rehab Success - A group of friends enjoying a picnic. What Constitutes Outpatient Rehab Success?

Some basic goals of treatment:

•To achieve and maintain abstinence.
•To increase participant & family understanding of addiction as a primary disease.
•To increase participant and family understanding of relapse warning signs.
•To rebuild trust and healthy communication between participant and family.
•To introduce 12-step support groups to the participant and his or her family.
•To support the self-esteem of the participant and the family.

Other goals of outpatient rehab will be identified as a result of our clinical assessment process. Our experienced rehab counselors help the participant identify exactly what the participant wants to achieve during treatment and how we can assist him or her on their way to recovery.

As treatment goals are identified, an individualized treatment plan is developed. Measurable objectives are established to determine progress toward achievement of these goals.

Genesis Outpatient Treatment Works

Genesis Programs 2014 Outcome Studies

Victorious woman, arms raised high, looking toward the sunset.• In 2014 we admitted and treated 184 participants.
• 67% of survey respondents at 6 months post-discharge report continuous abstinence since completing the program.
• 90% of survey respondents at 6 months post-discharge report regular 12-Step attendance.
• 100% of survey respondents at 6 months post-discharge report no legal problems related to alcohol or other drugs since entering treatment.
• 64% of survey respondents at 6 months post-discharge report no medical problems.
• 90% of survey respondents at 6 months post-discharge report “Life is better than before treatment.”

Needless to say, our treatment team is generally pleased with these statistics.
This is our vision for the future:

• While adapting our policies to allow for a brief, medically supervised taper off some addicting medications, we hold fast to our belief that abstinence is a realistic goal and that real recovery is best achieved in a climate of total abstinence.
• We believe it is our responsibility as a treatment provider to introduce our participants to 12-Step fellowships as a vehicle of recovery and a source of long- term support. In doing so, we have consciously set ourselves apart from current industry trends and believe that in the long run our stand will be validated.
• As outpatient treatment specialists for over 22 years, we have included an Education Track for those not meeting full admission criteria.

Family & Friends Support Group

It is neither a new thought nor a well-kept secret that family involvement in a substance misuse or abuse treatment program greatly increases the chances for a successful experience. However, some of the subtle reasons for family involvement are often misunderstood or even overlooked. For example, we know that it increases the chances for a successful treatment experience for the enrollee, but we also know that it helps the family and friends who participate as well. We suspect that anyone reading this who has had any type of a relationship with someone in an active addiction can confirm that they have paid an emotional price themselves. And depending on the nature of that relationship, it could have been a social or even financial price as well. Unfortunately, the needs of the friends and family rarely get met or even identified unless the substance abuser gets into a treatment program. And even then, the opportunities for them to get help with their own issues related to these relationships are limited at best.

The Genesis ‘Family & Friends’ support group is a direct result of feedback and requests that have come from participants in the regular Tuesday night family groups that are a part of the treatment program for our patients. It was through them that we were inspired to create an interactive education and support group that is open to the public and designed specifically for the needs of family and friends of substance abusers regardless of whether they are in recovery.

You do not need to have a loved one enrolled in Genesis past or present to take advantage of this unique opportunity. We have Family & Friends support groups at both our Ventura and our Thousand Oaks location on Wednesday nights from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. If you feel that you or anyone you know might benefit from this opportunity, or even if you just have some questions, please give us a call.

Over 60 Track – Coming Soon!

Health care providers often overlook the possibility of substance abuse or misuse in older adults. Despite the staggering rate of increase in the abuse of alcohol and prescription drugs among adults 60 and over, health care providers often find it difficult to diagnose because the symptoms can mimic other medical conditions and behavioral disorders found among this population. In addition, misconceptions and ageism add to reasons why older adults remain under-identified, under-diagnosed, and under-treated.

There is no demographic that is immune to the possibility of substance misuse. And while any age group is susceptible, it is also true that the majority of available treatment is geared toward those between the ages of 25 and 45. Genesis Programs recognizes that while most issues related to substance misuse are common along all ages, the over 60 population presents unique life experiences, perspectives, and ideas that can best be cultivated into their recovery through participation with others who can best identify with them. Additionally, as many of the definitions, models, and classifications of drug misuse or alcohol consumption levels are do not account for age-related physiological and social changes, they simply do not apply to older adults.

As outpatient treatment providers for over two decades, our experience has inspired us to provide this under-served population with the Genesis Over 60 Track. Group sessions will be held three days per week from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Treatment is individualized, and length of stay is determined by personal progress and specific need. Cost of treatment is based on length of stay and, if applicable, financial assistance can be provided.

Addiction Counseling: What Makes it Different? https://genesisprograms.com/addiction-counseling-what-makes-it-different/ Thu, 11 Jun 2020 09:26:50 +0000 https://genesisprograms.com/?p=1521 The post Addiction Counseling: What Makes it Different? appeared first on Genesis Programs, Inc..

What Makes Addiction Treatment Different?

William White, in his new book, The History of Addiction Counseling in the United States, says the following:
“There are four defining premises of addiction counseling that historically separate the addiction counselor from other helping roles. These premises are that: 1) severe and persistent alcohol and other drug problems constitute a primary disorder rather than a superficial symptom of underlying problems, 2) the multiple life problems experienced by AOD-impacted individuals can be resolved only within the framework of recovery initiation and maintenance, 3) many individuals with high problem complexity (biological vulnerability, high severity, co-morbidity) and low “recovery capital” (internal assets, family and social support) are unable to achieve stable recovery without professional assistance, and 4) professional assistance is best provided by individuals with special knowledge and expertise in facilitating the physical, psychological, socio-cultural and often spiritual journey from addiction to recovery.”

Treating those suffering from addiction, including the affected family members and loved ones, poses unique challenges and requires special skills and knowledge.

First, people with other illnesses generally seek medical care when to treat their condition. This is not true of those with Substance Use Disorders due to the stigma, hopelessness, denial, and impaired judgment associated with alcohol and other drug problems. Therefore, treatment must seek above all to reduce stigma and offer hope.

Second, persons with Substance Use Disorders often have concurrent public health, mental health, and social issues (legal problems, employment problems, marital problems, etc.) the resolution of which are critical for recovery. Counselors providing treatment therefore need to have skills and resource knowledge in the integration and coordination of other services.

Third, long term recovery from Substance Use Disorders uniquely depends in most cases upon ongoing, patient-initiated activities and involvement with non-medical, non-professional community resources (e.g. 12-Step groups). Professionals therefore need to view their role primarily as one of facilitating the client’s engagement with these resources.

Lastly, what the addiction counselor brings, according to Cardwell Nuckols, Ph.D., is “respect for the spiritual aspects of healing…. We’ve got the psychotherapy and the pharmacotherapy, but we have this spiritual tradition that respects the power of spiritual change – acceptance, surrender, forgiveness, serenity and other experience of a spiritual nature.”
